The Kansas City Chiefs have gotten the better of the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs during the Patrick Mahomes vs. Josh Allen era. But in the regular season, the Bills had a four-game winning streak. That has since been extended to five games after Sunday.
The Chiefs fell to the Bills 28-21. Even though Buffalo gave Kansas City a decent shot at tying the game up after a missed field goal, the Chiefs simply didn’t have enough time on the clock to find a better way to get into the end zone. Make no mistake about it, the game was winnable.
After the game, Mahomes was asked about one series in particular that proved to be costly. The Chiefs had a first and goal situation on Buffalo’s one-yard line. Four chances for the Chiefs to get in the end zone for a touchdown from one yard out. Despite three attempts, Mahomes and company failed to move the ball any closer to close the half.

Mahomes said that the team needs to “find a way to get into the end zone” and that he needs to do a better job.
Mahomes set the team up at the one-yard line after a 40-yard pass to Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. On first-and-goal, Kareem Hunt was stopped for no gain. Second-and-goal, Mahomes threw an incomplete pass. Third-and-goal, Mahomes’ pass to tight end Travis Kelce was incomplete. That resulted in Harrison Butker making a 19-yard field goal.
Sure, the Chiefs got points on the board, but Mahomes was looking for a touchdown. Who knows how the game could have turned out if the Chiefs had put seven points on the board instead of three.
Mahomes did have his chance at redemption after Bills kicker Matt Prater’s 52-yard field goal attempt hit the upright of the goal post. The Chiefs had the football on their own 42-yard line with just 22 seconds remaining. Mahomes completed an 18-yard pass to Xavier Worthy on the first play. But Mahomes followed that up with three consecutive incomplete passes to end the game.

It was an off-game for Mahomes, as he struggled against Buffalo’s defense. Mahomes completed just 15-of-34 attempts for 250 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. Now, the Chiefs sit at 5-4 on the year and two games back of the Denver Broncos for first place in the division. Ironically, the Broncos are next up on the schedule for the Chiefs after their bye next week.
Mahomes obviously wants to see improvement on offense, and he takes the blame for that. We’ll see if they can do that next week against a tough Broncos defense. Maybe they’ll bring in some reinforcements on Tuesday’s trade deadline?
